Structure

The structure of the past perfect simple tense is:

  • Affirmative: Subject + had + past participle
  • Negative: Subject + had not (hadn't) + past participle
  • Interrogative: Had + subject + past participle

Form Affirmative

  • Subject + had + past participle
  • Example: He had been there before.

Form Negative

  • Subject + had not (hadn't) + past participle
  • Example: They hadn't eaten anything yet.

Form Interrogative

  • Had + subject + past participle
  • Example: Had you ever done bungee jumping?

Al igual que el resto de tiempos verbales, las oraciones interrogativas en past perfect
también cuentan con sus propias respuestas cortas.

Use

The past perfect simple is used to:

  • Express that an action was completed before another action in the past.
  • Refer to an action that occurred before a specific moment in the past.
  • Refer to a repeated action that occurred until a specific moment in the past.
  • Refer to an action that started at a specific point in the past and continued until another moment in the past when it ended.

Example

  • I realized I had forgotten the gift.
  • The snow had already melted by midday.
  • But you had visited it three times already.
  • Yes, he had had it for nearly 20 years.

Recuerda que para formular el past perfect de los verbos regulares añadiremos -ed al final del verbo principal. Para los irregulares miraremos la 3ª columna de la lista.
